Quality food on a budget

I may be cheating a little here, using this blog space to discuss a program I’ve already written about, but with constant announcements of layoffs and closures and continued use of the word “recession,” I think it’s worth repeating.

You could be saving a lot on your groceries.

I don’t mean clipping coupons or buying off-brand items (although neither of those is a bad idea). I mean taking advantage of the program Angel Food Ministries offers nationwide.

For just $30 you can order a box of food that has a general store value of about $70-75. In each box is a few pounds of meat, a few pounds of frozen vegetables, a dozen eggs, a dessert item and some canned and non-perishable food — all of it top quality, none of it second-class or damaged container food.

The program is available to everyone regardless of income, race, family size or religious affiliation. Most programs are housed in churches — it is a ministry — but no one preaches to you or tries to get you to join.

You can order as many boxes as you  want — each box should feed a family of four for a week. The menu changes from month to month — see the February menu here.

Here’s how it works: you find a host site in your area and give them a call. Orders are due by a certain day each month. Food is shipped overnight the last Friday night/Saturday morning of the month and the host site holds a distribution day, usually for just about 2 hours.

You can order one box or you can order four boxes. Just make sure you bring a box/cooler/container to take home all your food — those aren’t provided.

I’ve tried it a couple times — I wouldn’t want to attest to the quality of the food without trying it — and it’s really not bad. The meat isn’t Grade A, but it’s pretty good and the rest of the menu is always something my teenagers will eat.

It won’t solve all your woes, but it’s a good start.

    • Thanks for sending the link, Erik. I’ll post an update, too, and keep an eye on the Web site.
