New church in town

A family from Arizona is buying the former Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church building at 327 35th St. NE in Cedar Rapids with plans to start a new church there.

The Rev. Jeremy Higgins is an associate pastor at the Calvary Chapel in Tempe, Ariz., that his father founded more than 30 years ago. Higgins served under his father, the Rev. John Higgins, for more than 15 years before being called to start a new church in Cedar Rapids, he said this week.

“My wife and I have been praying for two years and we just feel like that is where the Lord is calling us,” he said. “There is a good vision for ministry there. We feel we’ve been trained up enough by our sending church that we can come and minister to the people of Cedar Rapids.”

The Kenwood Park building is currently occupied by the congregation of Salem United Methodist Church, which was displaced in the June flooding.

The Kenwood Park congregation created a new church with the congregation of Central Park Presbyterian Church. The new church, Echo Hill, is constructing a new church building north of Marion on C Avenue.
